Counsellor and Medical Care

School Counsellors

Mikala Torrance and David Woodall are both fully qualified counsellors and psychotherapists with experience in working with children and young people. Their role is primarily to work with pupils on a one two one basis and they work across the whole range of issues from friendship groups and fitting in, through to anxiety, depression and other mental health difficulties.

Mikala works with Head of PSHE, Lisa Greatwood, to develop and deliver the PSHE curriculum; particularly around emotional literacy, emotional health and resilience. Referrals through to the counselling service can be made in a number of ways. Pupils can self-refer through our confidential e mail address, they can be referred via the housemaster or mistress, matron, personal tutor or the GP and the nursing team. Our counsellors work within confidential boundaries with the children, providing they are not at risk, from themselves or someone else or they tell us that another child is at risk. Mikala and David aim to work collaboratively with our youngsters to help them find ways forward with their challenges.

Medical Care

Boys and girls are generally referred to the San by the House Matrons or by games staff – but also by any staff when there is real or apparent medical need. Doctors also see pupils by self-referral on any personal matter as they might at home with a local GP.

Medical care is extensive and is centred in the Sanatorium, this is the traditional name of the health centre in the School and is affectionately known as 'the San'. Despite the old-fashioned name the nurses and doctors provide up to date care in a confidential and friendly environment.

The full range of GP and nursing services is provided by a team of nurses and doctors who enjoy working in the often challenging, but rewarding, area of adolescent health.

Doctor’s Surgery

The San has a reception, waiting room and several treatment rooms. The School doctors are from The Revel Surgery in Brinklow. Dr Steve Brown, Dr Hannah Collier and Dr David Pearce consult each weekday between 9-11am on Monday and Fridays and 3-5pm on Tuesday to Thursdays.

Nurse Appointments

The San is open every day in term time Monday to Saturday 7.30am to 7pm and 11am to 2pm on Sundays. The San is staffed by a team of 5 Registered Nurses, headed by Sarah Harris. Pupils are encouraged to discuss their concerns with the nurse on duty, and parents are welcome to contact the staff at any time. Each house has a named nurse who are well known in the houses.

Private physiotherapy sessions are held at the San and are valuable in promoting speedy recovery from sports injury.

David Pinchen from the Walk Well Clinic in Rugby visits the San on a Thursday morning for private appointments with pupils.
