Rugby School recruits Music Scholars who are able to perform to a high standard on orchestral instruments and also ex-choristers from cathedral and collegiate choirs.

The Music Department offers its Scholars support and access to a range of activities designed to develop and extend their experience and skills.

Music Scholars are given extra tutorials by members of the Music Department to support and encourage their musical development. Music Scholars have free music lessons and are encouraged to try out other instruments of their choice. Where applicable, individual learning programmes are designed to meet the demands and needs of those wishing to study music at conservatoire or university following Rugby and several scholars receive additional tuition with teachers at Birmingham Conservatoire.

Music scholars are expected to:

  • Participate fully in music ensembles appropriate to their talents

  • Practise regularly

  • Take part in concerts as required and to lead by example

  • Take music as one of their academic options in the F block and at GCSE. They often take Music in two Option Blocks in the F Block and at GCSE to maximise the amount of practice time available to them.
