Instrumental and Vocal Music

  • Approximately 600 music lessons take place in the Music Schools each week.

  • Tuition is offered in all orchestral instruments as well as piano, organ, guitar, harp, bagpipes and singing.

  • Individual lessons are supplemented with regular mini-masterclasses given by our own professional full-time and part-time staff.

  • We welcome eminent musicians to lead masterclasses and adjudicate competitions.

  • Students are mentored carefully, making sure that they have time to practise.

  • Lessons take place on a rotating basis during timetabled hours or, in the case of sixth formers, during private study periods.

  • All pupils learning instruments are invited to take part in ensembles, just as vocal students join choirs.

  • Application forms for instrumental and vocal tuition are available from the music department, or can be downloaded here.

  • Theory of Music classes are available in out of school time to help pupils prepare for their grade 5 theory exam.

  • This exam is usually needed for instrumentalists and singers who wish to progress beyond ABRSM Grade 5 on their chosen instrument.

  • Instrumental and vocal teachers provide aural training as part of regular lessons.

  • Additional tuition is also available from full time music staff towards exam periods.
